Former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was beaten by medieval prince Alexander Nevsky in a poll held by a TV station to find the greatest Russian.

Stalin came third, despite being responsible for the deaths of millions of Soviets in labour camps and purges.

Alexander Nevsky fought off European invaders in the 13th century to preserve a united Russia.

In second place was reformist Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin, who was assassinated in 1911.

More than 50 million people voted by phone, the internet or via text messages in the poll held by Rossiya, one of Russia’s biggest television stations.

The voting took place over six months as 500 original candidates were whittled down to a final 12.

A priest dialled 999 when staff at Manchester Airport’s WHSmith would not allow him to use the toilet, police have revealed.

It was one of many “frivolous” calls made to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), which dealt with 5,000 emergency reports over Christmas.

The force has urged the public not to dial 999 for “ridiculous” reasons.

One woman complained she was unable to get through to Strictly Come Dancing to vote for Tom Chambers in the final.

Police also received a 999 call from a man who complained staff at a takeaway had wrongly put mushrooms on his pizza.

Another caller dialled the number to ask for chemist opening times.

Requiem for a Dream is, in my view, the best movie ever to be made. It is immensely powerful, desperately hard hitting and tragically emotional. Watch it and I guarantee, you will emerge a different person.

America’s CIA has found a novel way to gain information from fickle Afghan warlords – supplying sex-enhancing drug Viagra, a US media report says.

The Washington Post said it was one of a number of enticements being used.

In one case, a 60-year-old warlord with four wives was given four pills and four days later detailed Taleban movements in return for more.

“Whatever it takes to make friends and influence people,” the Post quoted one agent as saying.

“Whether it’s building a school or handing out Viagra.”

American fast food chain Burger King is marketing a men’s fragrance with the scent of meat.

Called Flame, the company says the spray is “the scent of seduction with a hint of flame-broiled meat”.

The scent is on sale in New York for $3.99 (£2.65) and through a website that features a variety of romantic images – but no actual burgers.

Its character the Burger King is also seen reclining almost naked in front of a log fire with whipped cream.

A Florida pizza delivery man who was challenged by armed robbers in the city of Miramar got in first with his own weapon – a large pepperoni pizza.

Eric Lopez Devictoria, 40, flung the piping hot pizza at the gunman, then turned on his heels and ran.

He made a safe getaway, according to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, despite one shot being fired as he fled.

Police later arrested three teenage suspects, who have been charged with armed robbery.

There is a giant black hole at the centre of our galaxy, a study has confirmed.

German astronomers tracked the movement of 28 stars circling the centre of the Milky Way, using the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

The black hole is four million times heavier than our Sun, according to the paper in The Astrophysical Journal.

Black holes are objects whose gravity is so great that nothing – including light – can escape them.

According to Dr Robert Massy, of the Royal Astronomical Society, the results suggest that galaxies form around giant black holes in the way that a pearl forms around grit.
